Vietnam Hails Start-up of Offshore Gas Field
Vietnam has begun flowing gas from the Sao Vang-Dai Nguyet field off its southern coast, state-owned PetroVietnam Gas Corp said on November 16.
At plateau the field is expected to produce 1.5bn m3 of gas and 2.8mn barrels of oil and condensate annually, which is 15% of Vietnam's total output last year.
Sao Vang-Dai Nguyet is situated at blocks 05-1b and 05-1c some 350 km offshore. Japanese companies Idemitsu Kosan and Teikoku Oil own shares of 43% and 37% in the project, while PetroVietnam controls the remaining 20%.
Gas from the field is being delivered via the PetroVietnam-operated Nam Con Son 2 pipeline to onshore facilities in Vung Tau, and will be sold to power plants and other industrial customers in southern Vietnam, the company said.
Sao Vang-Dai Nguyet is situated in waters 110-130 m deep, and comprises high-temperature and high-pressure reservoirs. Vietnam has recently a raft of LNG import projects and new gas-fired power plants, as it looks to bolster the role of gas in its energy mix.
