Turkish Distributors Test Hydrogen

Turkey's association of natural gas distributors (Gazbir) plans to study the use of hydrogen for heating purposes under a project backed by the country's energy regulator Emra, Turkish news agency Haberturk reported in an article shared by Gazbir on social media.

Research and development activities will take place in a testing centre in Konya, south of Ankara. Preliminary studies and an environmental impact assessment on injecting hydrogen into the gas grid have already been completed, according to Haberturk. The hydrogen will be produced from renewable energy sources, the agency said.

The project, due to be completed by the end of 2021, envisages replacing 6% of the gas in Turkey's distribution network with hydrogen, serving as an alternative heating fuel that can reduce Turkey's carbon footprint.
