Total Makes Fourth Find off Suriname
French oil major Total and its US partner Apache have made a "significant" oil and gas discovery at Block 58 off Suriname, marking their fourth find at the site in just a year.
The Keskesi East-1 well, drilled in waters 725 m deep, encountered 63 m of net hydrocarbon pay, including 58 m of oil and gas in good-quality Campano-Maastrichtian reservoirs and 5 m of oil in Santonian reservoirs, Total said on January 14. Wireline logging has been carried out and drilling continues, in order to target the deeper Neocomian-aged targets, Total said.

"We are delighted to announce this new discovery, which confirms this first exploration campaign as a full success and adds to the proven resource base," Total's senior vice president for exploration Kevin McLachlan said. “We are also excited, as new operator of the block, to start the appraisal operations designed to characterise the 2020 discoveries, while in parallel start a second exploration campaign on this prolific block in 2021.”
Total assumed operatorship of Block 58 on January 1 with a 50% interest. The company made the Maka Central discovery within the acreage in January 2020, followed by the Sapakara West find in February that year and Kwaskwasi in July. These past discoveries were mostly oil.
The Noble Sam Croft drillship will be released after finishing the Keskesi East-1 well, Total said. But the French firm awarded a contract to Maersk Drilling in November last year for the supply of two more deepwater rigs for the new campaign at the block in 2021.
