Tallgrass commits to Project Canary

US midstream company Tallgrass Energy said September 27 that a gas pipeline stretching from Colorado to Ohio will be the first of its kind in the country to receive responsibly-sourced certification.

Tallgrass said it established a multi-year partnership with Project Canary to monitor emissions from its Rockies Express natural gas pipeline, one of the longest in North America at more than 2,735 km. The company said this is “the first interstate natural gas transmission pipeline in the US to receive a comprehensive and independent environmental assessment and certification from Project Canary.”

Tallgrass said the long-term goal of working with Project Canary on the certification process was to establish itself as a responsible midstream player.

“This first-of-its kind engagement underscores the critical importance of natural gas transmission systems in the energy transition,” Tallgrass president Matt Sheehy said.

Tallgrass is the second US midstream player to turn to Project Canary to certify is natural gas in September. Tennessee Gas Pipeline (TGP), a subsidiary of Kinder Morgan, reached a strategic agreement last week with Southwestern Energy Company to reduce methane emissions across the value chain by dealing with responsibly-sourced gas.

Southwestern Energy under the terms of the agreement will produce the gas and Kinder’s subsidiary will transport it through existing infrastructure, primarily in the Appalachia basin.
