Kinder Morgan to deliver responsible gas to US markets

Midstream company Kinder Morgan initiated an agreement to send responsibly-sourced natural gas (RSG) to the US Northeast market, it said September 21.

Tennessee Gas Pipeline (TGP), a subsidiary of Kinder Morgan, said it reached a strategic agreement with Southwestern Energy Company to reduce methane emissions across the value chain by dealing with RSG.

“RSG is natural gas that has been produced from a natural gas well and transported by companies whose operations have been independently verified as meeting certain environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards, particularly related to methane emission reductions,” Kinder explained.

The partners will get certification through Project Canary’s process. The agreement relates to production sites in the Appalachia shale basin operated by Southwestern Energy.

Southwestern Energy under the terms of the agreement will produce the gas and Kinder’s subsidiary will transport it through existing infrastructure.

“This is one of several RSG initiatives currently underway at Kinder Morgan and aligns with our commitment to minimise methane emissions associated with the production, transportation, storage and distribution of natural gas,” Tom Martin, the president of Kinder’s natural gas pipeline division, said.

Kinder said it expected the gas will meet the demands of about 100,000 homes annually and will be available on the market by November.
