Spanish Operator to Inject More Biogas into Grid

Spanish gas transmission system operator (TSO) Enagas, pipeline operator Infraestructura Biometagas and Biometagas La Galera have agreed to connect the latter's industrial production plant in Tarragona to the gas network, they said March 4. It is the first private initiative in Spain to inject biomethane into the grid, the one other project being state-funded.

The biomethane will come from 150 metric tons/day of waste from agriculture and farming and at its maximum production capacity will generate and inject some 50 GWh/year.

The biomethane is separated from other components of the biogas to raise the calorific content, using technology owned by AGF Ingenieria de Procesos.

Enagas said the project is an "efficient and modular technological solution that contributes to decarbonisation, with the promotion of renewable gases such as biomethane, and promotes the development of the circular economy, thanks to the recovery of organic waste. It is also a driving initiative for employment and local development."

Enagas said that its gas pipeline network is ready for a major surge in such grid connction requests.
