Seven more firms sign up to initiative to slash maritime methane emissions
Seven more companies have joined the Methane Abatement in Maritime Innovation Initiative (MAMII), aimed at reducing methane emissions in the maritime industry.
The new members are CoolCo, United Overseas Management, Capital Gas, Celsius Tankers, Global Meridian Holdings, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, and TMS Cardiff Gas. They join existing members that include Safetytech Accelerator, Maran Gas Maritime, Mediterranean Shipping Company, Carnival Corporation & Plc, Seaspan Corporation, Shell, Lloyd’s Register and Knutsen Group.
MAMII was set up in September last year to identify, accelerate and advocate technology solutions that can support the maritime industry in measuring and managing methane emissions, and its membership has doubled in the last six months. Its aim is to minimise the environmental impact of LNG in shipping and aid the transition to future fuels.
LNG remains popular as a lower-carbon maritime fuel option, with the number of LNG-fuelled vessel orders staying strong in 2022 despite higher gas prices.
“We are looking forward to the next few months when we move from analysis and research into piloting new methane measurement technology on ships," Steve Price, head of partnerships at Safetytech Accelerator, said in a statement on March 16. "Measuring actual emissions is a critical step in the decarbonisation of the shipping journey."
