Nord Stream 2 Construction Moves Forward

Russia has completed a 2.6-km section of Nord Stream 2 in Germany's exclusive economic zone using the Russian-registered Fortuna pipelaying vessel, the pipeline's operator told NGW on December 29.

Construction of the pipeline is understood to have resumed in early December, according to German maritime authorities. A further 30 km of linepipe are still to be completed in German waters and another 120 km in Danish waters, the Gazprom-owned Nord Stream 2 operating company told NGW.

Nord Stream 2 did not provide any further details on the timeframe for the work, although the Danish Maritime Authority issued a notice on December 22 saying pipelaying work in Denmark's offshore zone would take place from January 15.

The pipeline's construction was halted a year ago after the US threatened sanctions against companies providing pipelaying vessels for the work, prompting Swiss firm Allseas to withdraw from the project. Russian authorities have said they expect Nord Stream 2 up and running in early 2021. At full capacity it will pump 55bn m3/year of Siberian gas to Germany.
