Oman to Utilize Gas from Oil Wells
Oman is planning to recover and utilise gas from oil wells that would otherwise be flared or vented.
According to The Times of Oman, Ministry of Oil & Gas and Oman Trading International (OTI), an Oman Oil Company group company, announced the registration of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project in Block 9 of the Safah oil field, under the United Nations' Kyoto Protocol.
Said bin Talib Al Maawali, VP of Petchem and Business Development at OTI, said; "The Safah CDM project helps to reduce carbon dioxide emissions through the recovery of flare gas at five different locations in the oil field. The recovered gas will be compressed and some of it will be used to generate power and some will be delivered to the national grid. The project will be able to monetise the Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) issued by the UNFCC depending on market conditions."
Block 9 is operated by Occidental of Oman under a development and production sharing agreement with the Ministry of Oil and Gas, the newspaper said.
