Lithuania, Poland launch cross-border gas pipe
Lithuania and Poland commissioned a cross-border gas pipeline on May 5 that will provide the latter with increased access to non-Russian supply, days after Gazprom cut off gas supply to the country.
The Gas Interconnector Poland Lithuania (GIPL) will be capable of flowing gas to Poland at a rate of 1.9bn m3/year within the next five months, and 2bn m3/year of gas in the opposite direction. While Lithuania became the first EU nation to stop buying Russian gas last month, thanks to the Klaipeda LNG import terminal, access to Poland's Swinoujscie LNG terminal as well will bolster its energy security.

GIPL was opened during a ceremony attended by Polish president Andrzej Duda and his Lithuanian counterpart Gitanas Nauseda. Duda said the 500-km pipeline was "a visible sign of the quality of relations between Poland and Lithuania."
Development of the EU project of common interest was backed with a €266mn ($282mn) grant from the bloc's Connecting Europe Facility.
