Koch Modular poised to launch new carbon capture technology
US engineering and modular construction firm Koch Modular said July 19 it was poised to launch Project Enterprise, a modularised, demonstration scale carbon capture system at Calpine’s Los Medanos Energy Center in California targeting the removal of 95% of CO2 from flue gas.
Project Enterprise takes advantage of a new carbon capture solvent developed by ION Clean Energy and will capture a portion of the flue gas from the gas-fired Calpine power station to assess the efficiency of CO2 capture with the solvent.
The process involves three steps. First, the hot flue gas is cooled. Then, the CO2is absorbed by the ION solvent. Finally, the solvent is regenerated in a distillation column, stripping the CO2 from the solvent and collecting it for either sequestration or use.
The project was jointly funded by the US Department of Energy, ION Clean Energy and Calpine.
