Italy’s Edison makes first LNG drop at new terminal

The first deposit of LNG was made at a new small-scale terminal at the Italian port of Ravenna, Italian energy company Edison said September 9.

The carrier Ravenna Knutsen received its cargo of LNG at the Enagas plant in Barcelona, Spain, for discharge at Ravenna. Edison said tank-filling operations at Ravenna confirmed its support for cleaner fuels, noting LNG was lower in emissions of sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides and CO2. Fuels stored at the depot will be used for trucking and ferry operations.

The Ravenna facility will be in full service by October. It has a nameplate storage capacity of 20,000 m3 of LNG and is capable of receiving up to 1mn metric tons/year of the super-cooled gas.

Edison agreed to work with Spanish gas infrastructure operator Enagas on developing small-scale LNG in the Mediterranean region in October last year. As part of the deal, Edison transferred a 19% interest in the Ravenna facility to Enagas, leaving it with 51%. The remaining 30% is held by Petrolifera Italo Rumena.

LNG imports met 17.8% of Italian gas demand last year, down from 19% in 2019, but still the second highest level on record.
