Inpex sanctions 5th stage extension of Shin Tokyo Line

Inpex Corp has made a final investment decision on the fifth stage extension of the Shin Tokyo Line natural gas trunk pipeline, it said on August 11.

The project will further secure a stable natural gas supply to the northern Kanto region of Japan, where natural gas demand is expected to grow steadily, it said. The fifth stage extension of the Shin Tokyo Line, which currently extends approximately 213 km from Joetsu City in Niigata Prefecture to Fujioka City in Gunma Prefecture, will lengthen the pipeline by approximately 16 km from Fujioka City in the direction of Tokyo.

The extension will enhance supply capacity by extending the double-tracking sector also served by the Tokyo Line. Following the extension, the Shin Tokyo Line will extend 229 km to Honjo City in Saitama Prefecture where it will connect to the Tokyo Line, which largely runs parallel to the Shin Tokyo Line.

Meanwhile, Inpex has decided to forgo the second stage double-tracking of the Ryomo Line over a 6 km stretch between Kamisato Town and Honjo City both in Saitama Prefecture, for which it had conducted a feasibility study.

This decision is based on Inpex’s expectation that a stable gas supply can be secured. The Ryomo Line currently extends approximately 89 km from Honjo City to Tatebayashi City in Gunma Prefecture and to Sano City in Tochigi Prefecture.
