India's Adani Total Gas to blend green hydrogen in city gas
India's Adani Total Gas (ATGL), a city gas distribution company, has launched a pilot project to blend green hydrogen with city gas in the city of Ahmedabad, it said on November 28. The project is expected to become operational in the first quarter of the financial year 2024-25.
Under the pilot project, ATGL will blend green hydrogen with natural gas to supply over 4,000 residential and commercial customers in Ahmedabad, the capital city of the western Indian state of Gujarat. Green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis of water using electricity generated from renewable energy sources, offers a clean and sustainable alternative to conventional fossil fuels.
The company plans to gradually increase the percentage of green hydrogen in the blend up to 8% or more, subject to regulatory approvals.
Upon successful completion of the pilot project, ATGL envisions expanding the supply of hydrogen-blended fuel to larger sections of Ahmedabad and other areas within its operational license areas. Studies have demonstrated that a hydrogen blend of up to 8% can effectively reduce emissions by about 4%, the company said.
ATGL is authorised to operate city gas networks in 33 geographical areas across India. The company additionally operates another 19 geographical areas in a joint venture with state-owned Indian Oil Corporation.
