Green ammonia company emerges in Norway
A consortium of Norwegian companies announced August 16 the creation of a new company, HEGRA, which was formed to make advancements in so-called green ammonia.
Norwegian engineering and construction firm Aker joined state-owned hydropower company Statkraft and chemical company Yara in creating the new company to electrify and decarbonise an existing ammonia plant at Heroya on the southern coast of Norway.

Like green hydrogen, green ammonia is produced using renewable energy as a power source. Not only does this yield a new source of cleaner fertiliser, but it has the potential to be used as a zero-emission fuel for the maritime industry.
“Aker, Yara and Statkraft have established HEGRA with the ambition of creating new industry in Norway that provides a competitive advantage in a growing global hydrogen economy, establishes green jobs for the future and forms the basis for a future Norwegian export industry,” the companies said in a joint statement.
HEGRA is an acronym formed by the name of the city on the southern Norwegian coast and “green ammonia.”
HEGRA’s founders said the company is aligned with the European Commissions Fit-for55 package, which calls for a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, relative to 1990 levels.
Assuming funding and other support mechanisms come through, the founders say their project could be up and running as early as 2026.
