First major components arrive at LNG Canada site
The first three major components of the Anglo-Dutch Shell-led LNG Canada project on Canada’s west coast have arrived at the construction site, the consortium told NGW June 11.
Crews spent the week of June 7 offloading the first of the liquefaction terminal’s two 345 mt main cryogenic heat exchangers (MCHE, pictured in banner photo) and a pair of precooler units, one weighing in at 308 mt and the other 284 mt. The units were offloaded from a cargo ship docked at LNG Canada’s new material offloading facility (MOF) in Kitimat Harbour, at the head of the Douglas Channel.

The units were placed on large, self-propelled modular transporters, which will move them in the coming days along the site’s 3 km haul road to the main construction area.
“Taking delivery of our first main cryogenic heat exchanger and precoolers is another significant milestone for the LNG Canada project, and represents a number of firsts for us,” LNG Canada CEO Peter Zebedee said. “It’s our first opportunity to receive critical infrastructure at our new material offloading facility, and our first heavy equipment transport along our new haul road to our main construction site.
The MCHE – 50 m in length – is the first of two that will be built for LNG Canada by Linde in Germany. The second is expected to arrive later this year, along with two more precoolers, which were also fabricated by Linde.
