European Commission Refers Romania for Failing to Adopt Emergency Gas Plan

Romania came under fire once more for its gas strategy, with the European Commission referring the country to the EU Court of Justice for failing to adopt an emergency plan under the EU Security of Gas Supply Regulation (EU) No 994/2010, and Hungarian Foreign Affairs Minister Peter Szijjarto pointing the finger at Romania, and Croatia.

‘In November 2014 the Commission proceeded to a reasoned opinion since Romania did still not comply with the Security of Gas Supply Regulation. There is still no emergency plan and this may jeopardise Romania's ability to deal with a possible crisis situation’ reads a note released by the European Commission on Thursday. 

The EU Security of Gas Supply Regulation creates common standards to measure and limit threats to gas security. It is part of European institutions’ push to increase regional cooperation and coordination.

A few hours before Hungarian authorities said that Romania and Croatia failed to secure investments to increase interconnections that could increase flows between EU members.  

In November 2014, the European Commission asked Romania to comply with EU rules on security of gas supply.
