Denmark's Top Gas Field to Shut Down

Denmark is due to shut down production today at its largest gas field, its transmission system operator (TSO) Energinet has confirmed to NGW, so that a three-year redevelopment programme can begin.

The field in the Danish North Sea has been in production since 1984 and typically accounts for 90% of national output. Over the years its platforms have been sinking, requiring its operator, the Danish Underground Consortium (DUC), to take action.

DUC’s shareholders are France’s Total, Denmark’s state-owned Nordsofondon and Norway’s Noreco.

“Tyra is closing down today,” a representative of Energinet told NGW. “We have the last years and months been in close contract with stakeholders in the gas market to inform about the situation during Tyra’s reconstruction.”

While the field is offline, Denmark will import extra gas from Germany and elsewhere in Europe, Energinet said.

Tyra’s redevelopment is slated to cost krone 21bn ($3.2bn), making it the largest single investment on record in the Danish North Sea. Production should finally resume on July 1 2022.

Total, Noreco and Nordosfondon were not immediately available for comment on Tyra’s closure.
