Bulgaria Expects First Azeri Gas on Dec 31

Bulgaria is due to start receiving gas from Azerbaijan through the Southern Gas Corridor on December 31, its government said on December 23, noting that the country would receive 1bn m3/year from the Shah Deniz field over a 25-year period.

The launch of supplies is possible thanks to the completion in November of the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), which runs through Albania, Greece and under the Adriatic Sea to Italy. Bulgaria will receive Azeri gas at the Kulata entry point at its border with Greece until October 2021, when the Interconnection Greece-Bulgaria (IGB) is due to start up.

Deliveries from Azerbaijan will help diversify Bulgaria's gas supply mix, the government said. The country sources almost all its gas from Russia. IGB will have an initial capacity of 3bn m3/yr, rising to 5bn m3/yr under a potential second stage.
