Wood secures contract for Tamboran's NTLNG project

Australian energy company Tamboran Resources has awarded UK's John Wood Group (Wood) the contract for the concept select phase of the proposed Northern Territory LNG (NTLNG) development at the Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct in Darwin, it announced on July 25.

During this phase, the focus will be on assessing the technical and commercial feasibility of constructing a 6.6mn tonnes/year LNG development, contingent upon the establishment of commercial flow rates from Tamboran's Beetaloo basin assets.

The concept select phase is expected to be completed in the first half of 2024, paving the way for the pre-front-end engineering and design (pre-FEED) phase in 2024. This study will evaluate various aspects of the project, including the proposed three-train concept, selection of LNG liquefaction technology (with a focus on e-drives powered by renewables), carbon capture and storage infrastructure, site configuration, and initial cost estimates.

“Tamboran is excited to be working closely with one of the world's most experienced engineering and consulting businesses, as we advance the development of the proposed NTLNG project. The commencement of this engineering phase with Wood signals Tamboran's intent to design and develop a best-in-class, low emissions facility to process low-reservoir CO2 Beetaloo gas for global LNG customers,” Tamboran's CEO, Joel Riddle, said.

The NTLNG project is aimed at developing a fully integrated onshore LNG facility in the Northern Territory, with operations spanning upstream, midstream, and downstream activities. The state government has granted Tamboran exclusivity over a 170-hectare site within the Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct. Tamboran has signed LNG supply agreements with BP and Shell.

A company spokesperson recently told NGW that the financing of the project is expected during 2024/2025 while the LNG production is expected to begin by 2030.
