Wartsila To Power Indonesian Peaking Unit

Indonesian state power utility PLN has appointed a consortium of local construction firm PT Wika and Spanish contractor TSK Electronica Y Electricidad to build the Sumbagut-2 peaking power plant in Aceh on north Sumatra, in the far west of the Indonesian archipelago.

Finland's Wartsila said June 28 it will supply 13 of its engines, operating on natural gas, to TSK that will be used to power the 240-MW new unit. The order is booked for 2Q 2017, first deliveries are expected in 2018, and the power plant is due to start up 1H 2019.

It will be the largest peaking power plant with technology from Wartsila in Indonesia and it will be located next to an existing plant delivered by Wartsila and PT Wika in 2015. The new plant will respond to a shortage of electricity capacity in northern Sumatra, said TSK. No contract values were disclosed.
