Voice of Russia: Moscow-Helsinki: progress as vital necessity
On Tuesday, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev met with his Finnish counterpart Tarja Halonen who arrived in Moscow on a short visit. The two leaders discussed bilateral ties and outlined future priorities for their successors since both are stepping down this year.
Successful cooperation in the economic sphere is the driver for the Russian-Finnish relations in other spheres. A St. Petersburg-Helsinki high-speed train link, a joint ship-building company based at STX Finland shipyards and many other joint projects have been carried out or launched during Tarja Halonen’s tenure. Finland played a significant part in the Russian-German Nord Stream gas pipeline project by giving its timely approval for the pipeline to cross the Finnish waters.
