Viridi acquires Brunswick biosolids plant to launch waste-to-RNG facility
Renewable gas (RNG) company Viridi Energy has acquired a legacy biosolids digester plant in Brunswick, Maine, with intentions to repurpose it into a waste-to-RNG facility, it announced on March 19.
Casella Waste Systems, a regional leader in solid waste, recycling, and resource management services, will oversee feedstock collection and delivery logistics for an estimated 85,000 tonnes/year of biosolids sourced from a network of wastewater treatment plants.
Through anaerobic digestion at Viridi's revamped Brunswick facility, the biosolids will be converted into energy to heat over 3,000 homes annually. Furthermore, the facility will directly supply electricity to Brunswick Landing, a sprawling 3,300-acre campus comprising more than 1.6mn ft2 of commercial, industrial, and professional office space housing numerous businesses.
Currently, Viridi is in the process of conducting siting, permitting, and environmental due diligence at the Brunswick site. Retrofit construction is anticipated to conclude by the second half of 2025, with full-scale operations slated to begin in 2026.
This acquisition in Brunswick marks Viridi's fourth significant deal announcement within the past year. In March 2023, Viridi initiated a partnership with Marathon County, Wisconsin, to convert landfill emissions into clean RNG. Concurrently, the company announced collaborations with Baldwin County, Alabama, and American Organic Energy to develop waste-to-RNG projects in their respective areas.
Viridi was launched in 2022 by a group of veteran RNG executives.
