Vietnam Seeks LNG from Qatar

Hanoi-based PetroVietnam has initiated talks with Qatargas for the import liquefied natural gas, commencing in 2013.

The gas trading arm of the Vietnamese state oil and gas group is keen to increase its natural gas suppliers following its growing demand for power generation in Vietnam.

The country has been working on a strategy to import gas from such Southeast Asian nations as Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia via the trans-ASEAN pipeline.

In 2010, gas accounted for 31.7% of Vietnam's power mix, second only to hydropower at 37.6%.
