Vietnam inaugurates Thi Vai LNG import terminal
PetroVietnam Gas, a unit of state-owned PetroVietnam, officially inaugurated the Thi Vai LNG import terminal on October 29, the company announced on the same day. The terminal received its commissioning cargo from Shell in July this year.
The Thi Vai LNG import terminal has an initial handling capacity of 1mn tonnes/year. It features a 180,000 m3 storage LNG tank, a jetty, and a regasification area. The terminal's capacity will be expanded to 3mn tonnes/year in the second phase.
PetroVietnam Gas plans to supply regasified LNG through pipelines and also transport LNG via trucks to downstream customers. The Thi Vai LNG import terminal is expected to play a significant role in addressing Vietnam's gas shortage beyond 2023 by augmenting gas supply to consumers, including the Nhon Trach 3 and 4 power plants, as well as industrial customers.
The state-owned company is also developing the Son My LNG import terminal. It signed a joint venture agreement with US-based AES Corp in 2021 regarding the operation of the terminal.
The Son My LNG import terminal project is part of a chain of LNG power projects in Binh Thuan province, with an estimated total investment of $1.31bn. The terminal will have a capacity of 3.6mn tonnes/year in the first phase and will go up to 9mn tonnes/year in the subsequent phase.
