US producer Northeast Natural pursues responsible gas
US producer Northeast Natural Energy (NNE) said April 29 it will join the growing initiative to have natural gas output certified as responsibly-produced.
It intends to deploy continuous emissions monitoring technology developed by Avitas, part of the Baker Hughes group, to help achieve certification under the MiQ methane standard. At the same time, it will seek certification under Equitable Origin’s EO100™ standard for responsible energy development.

Avitas, using its Lumen Terrain technology, will monitor NNE’s production facilities to enhance the EO100™ and MiQ certification process, including the company’s entire operating field in north central West Virginia.
“Our team has always focused on operating with the highest environmental standards in the industry and we have been exploring new technologies and certifications for several months,” NNE CEO Mike John said. “We are eager to be the first company in the Marcellus to use the Avitas continuous monitoring system to complement the certification processes of Equitable Origin and MiQ.”
NNE expects to have the certified gas, sometimes referred to as responsibly-sourced gas, available by Q4 2021.
Equitable Origin’s first certification for natural gas was applied in 2020 to gas produced in Canada by Seven Generations Energy, which subsequently entered premium-priced gas supply arrangements with one utility in Canada and one in the US. Earlier this month, EQT, the largest US natural gas producer, said it would also seek EO100™ certification.
