US-based Excelerate closer to leasing LNG terminal in Brazil
US-based Excelerate Energy said August 26 it had concluded the negotiation phase for the tender process for a lease at a Brazilian regasification terminal.
“Once the financial and legal qualification and certification stages have been concluded and all necessary regulatory approvals have been obtained, Excelerate will start importing LNG and selling regasified natural gas to its Brazilian customers,” the company said. “Excelerate will deploy one of its existing floating storage and regasification units (FSRU) for service at the Bahia regasification terminal.”

The Bahia terminal can import up to 700mn ft3/day of gas and is connected to two onshore delivery points via a 45-km pipeline.
Pre-qualified companies were invited in April to bid for leases of the facility’s island pier that can accommodate FSRU berthing. Among the other pre-qualified companies were Repsol LNG, BP Energy do Brasil, Compass gas e Energia, Total Gas & Eletricidade do Brasil, Eneva, Shell, Excelerate Energy and BG do Brasil.
Included in the lease is midstream infrastructure connected to two delivery points at the LNG terminal.
Brazilian Petrobras said the issue would now be forwarded to the necessary authorities at the company for authorisation of the final contractual terms.
Petrobras in June disqualified Excelerate Energy from the lease for not following the rules of the tender.
