Uniper, Eneco plan to make Dutch district heating cleaner
Finnish-owned Uniper and Dutch Eneco have signed a 12-year heat supply agreement, they said September 29. The heat will come from Uniper's 107-MW De Constant Rebequeplein combined-cycle gas turbine in The Hague which already supplies electricity to the city and heat to 38,000 homes.
The companies are also joining forces to make the heat supply of the city power station more sustainable in the coming years, so that it will be CO2 neutral by 2035, coinciding with both companies' own plans.

The duo aim to guarantee the heat supply in The Hague at peak times too, between 0700h and 0900h each day. Demand then is often so high that more district heating has to be made available rapidly. "However, thanks to the facilities' flexibility at the municipal power plant and Uniper's dispatching expertise, this type of peak period can be handled," they said.
While their statement calls the residual heat from power generation "renewable," although it is a by-product of natural gas combustion, the two are also working on hydrogen, geothermal and other conventionally renewable sources of heat.
Uniper has two other power-stations in the Netherlands – Rotterdam and Leiden – whose heat is used for district heating.
