Turkish shipbuilder delivers LNG-diesel tug to HaiSea Marine

Turkish shipbuilder Sanmar Shipyard said December 11 it had delivered the first of two dual-fuelled LNG tugs to HaiSea Marine, which will provide escort and harbour tug services to the LNG Canada project on Canada’s west coast.

HaiSea Marine is a joint venture of Haisla Nation, on whose traditional territory the 14mn tonnes/year LNG Canada project is being built, and Seaspan.

The HaiSea Kermode is the first LNG-fuelled tug to be delivered to Canada, and will be joined soon by its sister vessel, the HaiSea Warrior. The two LNG-diesel tugs will be part of a five-tug fleet that includes three battery electric vessels delivered by Sanmar to HaiSea Marine earlier this year.

Based on a design from Vancouver-based naval architect Robert Allan Ltd., the two stern-drive tugboats rank among the world’s highest-performing escort tugs.

HaiSea Kermode can run on diesel or LNG and features a diesel exhaust after-treatment system that complies with IMO Tier III emissions standards, the most stringent in the international marine industry.

A major advance towards sustainability lies in the tug’s ability to perform long-distance escort missions solely using LNG, significantly reducing emissions, especially CO2, Sanmar said.

“That a tug this powerful comes with such impressive green credentials is a fine example of how technological advance and innovation can pave the way to a sustainable and environmentally friendly future for our industry,” Sanmar Chair Ali Gurun said.
