Turkish LNG Imports Rise in 1Q

Turkey‘s LNG imports increased by 19% year on year to 4.565bn m3 in 1Q2018, although overall gas imports increased by only 0.9% to 16.345bn m3, Turkish energy regulator EPDK reported May 28.

Among piped gas suppliers, Azerbaijan increased deliveries by 8% to 1.722bn m3, while supplies from Iran and Russia declined by 6.5% and 2% respectively to 2.261bn m3 and 7.797bn m3.

Piped gas accounted for 72% of Turkish gas imports. The country’s indigenous gas production increased by 5% to 98.08mn m3 – still only 0.6% of national consumption.

Turkey’s gas consumption declined by 6% to 16.374bn m3 in 1Q18.  Turkey also exported 113.3mn m3 gas to Greece.

Turkey's state run gas transition system Botas was responsible for imports from Azerbaijan and Iran. Russian gas giant Gazprom signed a protocol May 26 with the Turkish government regarding future development of the overland section of the TurkStream gas pipeline.
