Topsoe to supply tech for Essar's UK carbon capture facility
Topsoe, an emission reduction technology developer, has been selected by Essar Oil UK, an integrated downstream energy company, to serve as a technology licensor for its upcoming £360mn ($458mn) carbon capture facility located in Stanlow, North West England, Topsoe said on January 2.
Topsoe will deliver its SNOX technology for the removal of nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, dust and other contaminants from the flue gas emitted in the production process. Its technology will be one of a number of integrated licensed solutions supporting Essar’s plant, and will contribute to reducing their CO2 footprint.
Essar’s carbon capture facility is expected to be operational by 2028, eliminating an estimated 1mn tonnes/year. The captured CO2 will be permanently sequestered in depleted gas fields under the sea in Liverpool Bay.
Essar is investing $1.2bn over the next five years to decarbonise its operations and targeting a 95% cut in emissions by 2030 through energy efficiency, carbon capture and fuel switching.
