Tokyo Gas to explore hydrogen
Tokyo Gas said July 7 it would work with general trading company Sumitomo to conduct an experiment utilising hydrogen at a power station.
A demonstration project at a Tokyo Gas power station will use a megawatt-class polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolyser to produce green hydrogen.

“Through this demonstration, we will accumulate operational know-how on large water electrolysers, accelerate their social implementation in combination with the development of direct hydrogen utilization and methanation technologies, and contribute to achieving the government's goal of realising a carbon-neutral, decarbonised society by 2050,” said Tokyo Gas general manager Hisataka Yakabe.
The Japanese government set a goal of achieving a carbon-neutral economy by 2050. Part of the plan includes the delivery of more than 420,000 metric tons/year of hydrogen. In June, the governments of Japan and Australia said they would jointly back initiatives to achieve net-zero emissions. Both sides said they would focus on alternatives such as clean hydrogen, clean fuel ammonia, carbon recycling and lowering emissions from steel and iron ore.
Delivery of the eletrolyser, developed by UK company ITM Power, is expected by June 2022. Results from the demonstration will shape future business developments.
"This is the first operational verification to be carried out in Japan on a foreign made large water electrolyser," Tokyo Gas said.
