TC Energy sanctions plan to electrify, expand ANR system
Canadian infrastructure company TC Energy said November 5 it had sanctioned its US$800mn WR Project, a suite of investments designed to increase base system reliability and expand part of its ANR Pipeline system in the US Midwest while lowering greenhouse gas emissions by about 30,000 mt/yr of CO2-equivalent.
The project will provide an additional 157,000 mn Btu/day of natural gas capacity to local area distribution companies and power utilities, and will include the installation of electric motor compressors with fuel switching capabilities to replace existing gas-powered compressor units along the ANR system.

“The electrification of horsepower for the project is expected to result in approximately a 43% reduction in carbon dioxide equivalent emissions at the source with full utilisation of the electric drive units – consistent with TC Energy’s approach to optimise our existing footprint with more sustainable infrastructure while improving reliability and organically growing our business along our existing corridor,” TC Energy CEO François Poirier said.
The new facilities are expected to be brought into service in Q4 2025.
