SUSPLAN Says Trans-National Energy Strategy Needed

Countries in the European Union need to cooperate on developing energy infrastructure, a spokesperson for the SUSPLAN (PLANning for SUStainability) project as says.

A statement released today said that the expansion and development of European energy projects will necessitate a change to electricity and gas grids.

The conclusion was reached after an examination of a number of nine case study countries, including Germany, Austria, Spain, Italy, Norway and Romania, and the challenges that could potentially be faced by European countries between 2030 and 2050.

The SUSPLAN project also found that Spain, Turkey and the Balkans will become increasingly important to gas transit in the coming decades. It also predicted a greater exchange of energy between countries in the future and an increased reliance on non-national resources.

"Each region develops its own generation structure with a growing share of renewable energy according to its natural resources, and will be increasingly dependent on the exchange of electricity and gas with neighbouring regions," the statement read.

The statement was prepared and released by the German Energy Agency, one of SUSPLAN's 16 project partners. The SUSPLAN project operates under the Seventh Framework Programme,  sponsored by the Directorate General for Energy (DG-ENER).
