Brian Van Vliet
Environmental Solutions Leader, Spartan Controls
Brian became part of the team at Spartan Controls in 2005. He is
currently an environmental solutions leader and technical specialist, but his prior roles at Spartan included project manager and application
specialist for petrochemical, oil sands and the oil and gas industries. Brian received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (Coop)
from the University of Alberta and lives here in Calgary, Alberta with
his wife and their two children. He is passionate about
improving field efficiencies and enjoys finding resourceful means to do
so. His efforts to reduce vented fuel gas have helped meet increasingly
stringent environmental regulations, while improving process
performance, reliability and safety.
Sander Duncanson
Associate, Regulatory, Environmental, Aboriginal and Land, Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP
Sander specializes in environmental, regulatory and Aboriginal law issues for natural resource developers. He has experience with matters before the National Energy Board, the Alberta Energy Regulator (and its predecessor the Energy Resources Conservation Board), the Ontario Energy Board, the British Columbia Environmental Assessment Office, the Alberta Utilities Commission, the Northwest Territories Office of the Regulator of Oil and Gas Operations and federal -provincial Environmental Assessment Joint Review Panels. The subject matter of Sander’s recent regulatory work includes oil and natural gas pipelines, oil sands (both mining and in situ), LNG export, offshore drilling, hydro-electric generation, mining (including coal, metal, potash and diamonds), natural gas processing, electricity transmission and contaminated lands. He was admitted to the Alberta bar in 2011 and to the British Columbia Bar in 2014.
Gerald Palanca
Manager, Climate Policy Assurance Technical Advisory Team, Alberta Energy Regulator
Gerald has more than 14 years of oil and gas experience, and currently works for the AER as manager of the climate policy assurance technical advisory team, which is tasked with designing and operationalising methane requirements for the upstream oil and gas industry in Alberta. Gerald’s previous roles at the AER included managing regulatory effectiveness projects and providing technical advice on flaring and venting matters. Before joining the AER, Gerald worked for Suncor Energy in A&D, energy efficiency and regulatory compliance roles. He has an applied bachelors degree in petroleum engineering and a technical diploma in chemical engineering. Gerald’s recent committee involvement includes chairing the Canadian Standards Association emissions committee, the Western Regulators Forum emissions committee and the Methane Reduction Oversight Committee.
Brendan Galloway
Progress Energy Canada
Brendan joined Progress Energy Canada in November 2016. Prior to that, he worked for Royal Dutch Shell for almost nine years supporting their Canadian unconventional and mineable and in-situ oilsands operations. Brendan also held the position of Environmental Scientist while at Golder Associates consulting from 2004 to 2008. He received his Doctorate from the University of New Brunswick in 2005. Brendan serves on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Society for Unconventional Resources.

Development Director – Energy Saskatchewan Research Council
Paul runs the SRC office in downtown Calgary where his role focuses on building single and multi-client applied research opportunities for SRC with leading energy industry partners and working with subject matter experts and the venture capital and private equity communities in support of new technology development across the energy spectrum, from enhanced oil recovery and partial bitumen upgrading to methane measurement and mitigation. He is a member of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, the Alberta chapter of the British-Canadian Business Association and an alumnus of the Calgary Consular Corps.
Prior to joining the SRC, Paul was national marketing manager for the energy sector at KPMG, and prior to that was with Calgary Economic Development, where he developed trade and inward investment opportunities for Calgary companies active in the energy sector and led trade and investment missions to China, Colombia and Australia.
Paul holds a master of arts in politics, philosophy and economics from Oxford University and a marketing diploma from the UK’s Institute of Marketing.
