Socar Helps Cut Azerbaijan's Emissions
Azerbaijan’s state-run oil and gas company Socar last year cut emissions of carbon dioxide from its projects to 5.891mn metric tons equivalent, down by 45% from 2010, the company told NGW. The major greenhouse gas emissions in its projects are CH4, CO2 and NO2. According to the environment ministry, the country as a whole emits 51mn mt/yr, excluding land use, land-use change, and forestry (LULUCF), which is down by about 30% from 1990. Azerbaijan is hoping to raise this to 35% reduction by 2030 as its contribution to the global climate change efforts.
Socar said that the flaring-related emissions stands at 0.3mn m³/'000 barrels of oil equivalent/yr, the lowest of the ten big oil exporters to EU.
