SoCalGas opens RNG fueling station near Los Angeles

Southern California Gas Co (SoCalGas) said November 4 it had opened a fueling station just outside of Los Angeles that would cater exclusively to vehicles running on renewable natural gas (RNG).

The company said the use of RNG as a transportation fuel in California is up 177% over the last five years.

"Fueling with RNG is an affordable way to eliminate air pollution and emissions linked to climate change,” said Don Widjaja, vice president of customer solutions at SoCalGas. “As the use of RNG in transportation continues to increase in our state, it is important to us to give drivers and fleet operators more locations to fuel up.”

In April, the utility pledged to convert hundreds of vehicles in its fleet to run on RNG by the end of the year.

Renewable natural gas can be sourced from the decomposition of organic matter in landfills or through the use of farm manure as a feedstock.

“RNG is not a fossil fuel,” SoCalGas stated. “It is a clean fuel produced from the methane emissions at dairy farms, wastewater treatment plants, landfills, and other waste streams.”

SoCalGas said using RNG helped displace some 1.83mn tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions last year.
