Italy's Snam Signs Guiding Principles

Italian gas transmission network owner-operator Snam signed June 26 the 'Guiding Principles' that commit it - along with the previous 12 signatories - to further reduce methane emissions from their assets.

In signing the Guiding Principles, Snam also agrees to encourage others across the natural gas value chain – from production to the final consumer – to do the same. It becomes the second Italian firm to sign up.

Other signatories are: Italy's Eni, along with BP, Chevron, Equinor, ExxonMobil, Gazprom, Qatar Petroleum, Repsol, Shell, Total, Wintershall and Woodside; the latter announced its signature two months ago.

ConocoPhillips CEO Ryan Vance on June 26 brushed off a suggestion from the former International Energy Agency executive director that it too should sign; BP CEO Bob Dudley urged him to reconsider.

The Guiding Principles were developed in collaboration with the IEA, Environmental Defense Fund, International Gas Union, the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative Climate Investments, the Rocky Mountain Institute, the Sustainable Gas Institute, the Energy and Resources Institute, and UN Environment.
