Sinopec Cleared to Develop Weirong Shale Gas Field
State-run Sinopec on November 19 said it had received approval from China's natural resources ministry to develop the Weirong shale gas field located in the Sichuan province.
Sinopec has drilled two test wells and has achieved production of 313,000m3/day and 253,000m3/day respectively, the company said. The proven reserves of the Weirong shale gas field were assessed at over 100 bn m3 last year.
This is the second shale gas development Sinopec has secured approval to develop. The company also operates the Fuling field in Sichuan, one of the largest shale gas fields in China, which entered production in 2015. Since 2014, a total of four shale gas fields have been discovered in the Sichuan: Fuling, Weiyuan, Changning and Weirong.
