Siemens To Power Eni’s Mexico FPSO

Germany’s Siemens is to supply three SGT-A35 34-MW gas turbines to power a future floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel at Italian group Eni’s Area 1 project offshore Mexico.

Japan-based MODEC is the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor selected to build the FPSO. It previously bought four SGT-A35 models from Siemens for a similar vessel stationed at the Sepia field off the coast of Brazil.

“MODEC selecting us again for such a large-scale project confirms our strong position in the power generation business,” Siemen America’s vice president for oil and gas, Patrice Laporte, said in a statement. “Due to the fast-paced delivery schedule of the overall FPSO, we will supply the gas turbine generation packages within a very short lead time.”

The Area 1 FPSO is due to start up in 2021 and will process up to 90,000 b/d of oil. It is also equipped with 900,000 barrels of storage capacity.

Eni is partnered at Area 1 with Qatar Petroleum. Earlier this month the pair launched early-phase production at Area 1’s Mizton oilfield.
