Siemens Inks New Bangladesh CCGT Deal

German engineering giant Siemens and Bangladesh’s state-run North-West Power Generation Company Limited (NWPGCL) inked September 7 a joint development agreement (JDA) to build a 3.6-GW gas-fired power plant at Payra in southern Bangladesh.

Costing around $3.0bn, it will be the largest power plant in the country, NWPGCL managing director Khurshedul Alam told NGW on the sidelines of the JDA signing ceremony in Dhaka.

This project will give a sustainable solution from LNG sourcing, procurement, transportation, re-gasification, delivery to power plant, electricity generation and supply electricity to the national grid in an integrated and holistic approach, he said.

NWPGCL has already acquired some 100 acres of land for the power plant project, which will be built by a joint venture, he added. The plant will be near the Payra 1.32-GW power plant which is now being built, Alam added.

The first phase of 1.2 GW is expected to be commissioned by December 2021; and the second phase of 2.4 GW by December 2022. Siemens and NWPGCL inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to build the plant on November 5, 2017.

The JDA signing would help finalise documents like power purchase agreement, implementation agreement, LNG sale and purchase agreement, land lease agreement, EPC contract operation and maintenance agreement.

The CEO of Siemens Bangladesh Prabal Bose said Siemens has so far installed approximately 6.0 GW of electricity capacity in Bangladesh and is the only technology partner in Bangladesh to build two state-of-the-art high-voltage direct current transmission stations.
