Shell Names Upstream Successor to Brown
Anglo-Dutch major Shell has appointed Wael Sawan as new upstream head and member of the board, succeeding Andy Brown, it said January 17. He takes over with effect from July 1

Brown will remain available to assist with transition until September 30 when he leaves the company after 35 years.
CEO Ben van Beurden said that Brown had provided "strong leadership of the upstream business, particularly having improved business performance during the recent years of low oil price. Through his disciplined focus on efficiency, portfolio optimization, safety and talent development he leaves our upstream business fit for the future.”
The UK governmment awarded him an OBE for his services to Qatari-British business relations.
Wael is a Canadian citizen of Lebanese origin and executive vice president for deepwater, which is one of Shell's core areas. He joined Shell in 1997 and has held a variety of commercial and operational leadership roles across the upstream, integrated gas and downstream businesses. He studied chemical engineering.
