SWANSEA West MP Geraint Davies is one of the authors of a report into shale gas issued by the Parliamentary Welsh Affairs Committee today urging caution in exploiting the fuel in Wales.

The Labour MP said: "Shale gas represents an opportunity for Wales but it should not come at the expense of our natural environment. Much of Western Europe's gas supplies is from countries subject to political instability so shale gas may be important in future to safeguard the UK's security.

"Seventy per cent of the UK's gas supply will be imported by 2025 and shale gas could potentially reduce our dependence on outside supply."
