Sempra earns US DoE re-export approvals for Mexican terminals

Sempra Infrastructure said December 22 it has earned US Department of Energy (DoE) authorisations to re-export LNG produced from US natural gas at its two planned Mexican liquefaction terminals.

Under the permits granted by the DoE, Sempra’s proposed Vista Pacifico LNG is authorised to re-export up to 200bn ft3/year of LNG produced from US-sourced natural gas to countries which do not have a free trade agreement (FTA) with the US. Vista Pacifico LNG is proposed as a 3.5mn mt/yr mid-scale LNG facility near Topolobampo, Sinaloa and is being developed in collaboration with Mexico’s state electricity commission.

A second permit from the DoE increases the authorised export volumes of LNG to non-FTA countries from Phase 2 of Sempra’s Energia Costa Azul LNG (ECA LNG) project to 636bn ft3/year. Phase 2 of ECA LNG is under development to provide 12mn mt/yr of liquefaction capacity.

Phase 1 of ECA LNG, comprising a single train with a nameplate capacity of 3.25mn mt/yr of LNG, is now under construction and expected to be operational in 2025. It received DoE export approvals in 2019.
