Sapura OMV Upstream produces first gas at Jerun field offshore Malaysia
Independent gas producer and operator SapuraOMV Upstream has produced the first gas at the Jerun field in Block SK 408, located off the coast of Sarawak, Malaysia, state-owned energy company Petronas announced on July 10.
SapuraOMV Upstream, the operator of this block, holds a 40% participating interest in the project, while Petronas Carigali and Sarawak Shell equally share the remaining 60%.
The Jerun field was discovered in 2015 by SapuraOMV following the drilling of nine exploration wells from 2014 to 2015. The project is capable of producing up to 550mn ft3/day of gas.
In April this year, France's TotalEnergies entered into an agreement with Sapura Upstream Assets to acquire its remaining 50% interest in SapuraOMV Upstream for $530mn. The closing of the deal is anticipated in the second half of 2024.
This deal follows a previous agreement signed with OMV on January 31, 2024, regarding the acquisition of its 50% interest in SapuraOMV Upstream. Upon the completion of both transactions, contingent on certain conditions, including regulatory approvals, TotalEnergies will have 100% ownership of SapuraOMV.
SapuraOMV Upstream is a joint venture between Austria's OMV and Malaysia's Sapura Energy.
