Eni hires Saipem for domestic gas supply pipe
Eni subsidiary Enimed has hired Italian engineering group Saipem to transport and install a pipeline to connect for wells at the Argo and Cassiopea fields to the Sicilian coast, under a contract worth €300mn ($305mn), Saipem said on August 2.
Saipem will install the 60-km pipeline in waters up to 660 m deep, using its Castorone and Castoro pipelaying vessels, while its Saipem 3000 vessel will install umbilicals linking the wells to the Prezioso platform. Argo and Cassiopeia lie in Italy's offshore Ibleo Area licence, 60%-owned by Eni and 40% by Edison. They are due online in 2023, with production expected to run into the 2040s.

The fields are set to be an important future source of domestic gas supply in Italy, which is scrambling to replace Russian imports in the wake of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. Russia currently meets 40% of Italy's gas needs, and Eni is focusing on a "fast-track" strategy to develop near-field discoveries to reduce this dependency.
