RWE Confirms Exploratory Gas Well in Turkmenistan

Germany’s RWE plans to drill an exploratory gas well in Block 23 in Turkmenistan, according to a statement by the Turkmen State Agency for the Management and Use of Hydrocarbon Resources.

The company confirmed the operations in an email, adding that this is “part of the company’s licence obligations.”

RWE has performed a three-dimensional seismic survey of the block. According to the production-sharing agreement with the Turkmen government, the German company will have 25 years’ rights to deposit. If the data gathered prove a commercially viable deposit, the German utility will proceed with the production of natural gas.

The company, which has been working on Block 23 in the Turkmen part of the Caspian Sea since 2009, has recently reported initial results to the Turkmen government, presenting an overview of the construction of West-Keymir-1 well.

Turkmenistan sees diversification of its natural gas supplies to world markets as a major energy policy priority, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said recently, adding that “our country is gradually increasing its exports of natural gas.”
