Repsol produces hydrogen at biomethane refinery
Spanish energy company Repsol said October 4 that it produced hydrogen for the first time using biomethane as a feedstock at a refinery in Spain.
Repsol described the end product as a renewable source material that can yield “low-carbon fuels such as gasoline, diesel and kerosene for aviation.”

The company achieved first production at a refinery in Cartagena, along the Mediterranean coast, where 10 metric tons of hydrogen was produced in a way that Repsol said prevented the release of about 90 mt of CO2.
“In this way, Repsol takes a first step to replace conventional natural gas with biomethane of sustainable origin to produce renewable hydrogen in its industrial complexes and thus decarbonise both its processes and its products,” the company stated.
The Spanish energy company aims to have as much as 400 MW of renewable hydrogen capacity installed by 2025, and more than 1.2 GW by 2030.
Repsol in July said it would work with Spanish train manufacturer Talgo on utlising hydrogen for rail.
Talgo will deal with the design, manufacturing and commissioning of the new self-propelled trains as part of the arrangement. Repsol, for its part, will make available its hydrogen generation infrastructure for the development.
