Renergen resumes LNG deliveries in South Africa

South Africa-focused Renergen announced on February 15 that LNG deliveries have recommenced from its Virginia project following a maintenance outage.

The company attributed the delays during the planned maintenance outage to the rescheduling of the maintenance period to coincide with helium coldbox repair. The shutdown extended beyond expectations due to unforeseen challenges encountered with the primary mixed refrigerant compressors.

Renergen operates the Virginia Phase 1 liquefaction plant, commissioned in 2022, producing approximately 50 tonnes/day of LNG. The upcoming Virginia Phase 2 is slated to increase production to about 680 tonnes/day, equivalent to 940,000 diesel liters/day. The Phase 2 operations are expected to be operational in 2026.

In June 2022, Renergen signed a preliminary agreement for a loan of up to $500mn from the US International Development Finance Corp. to support the second phase of the Virginia project.

The Virginia gas project comprises various gas fields across Welkom, Virginia and Theunissen in South Africa's Free State.
