Canadian Regulator Sets Kwispaa LNG Project for EA
The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) has determined that Steelhead LNG’s Kwispaa LNG project on Vancouver Island is likely to have adverse environmental impacts and has set the project for a full federal environmental assessment (EA).
In a decision released December 13, the CEAA ruled that, after reviewing the Kwispaa project description filed with federal authorities in October and public comments on the project description, it would subject the project to an EA. It invited the public to comment on the proposed guidelines for the preparation of an environmental impact statement by January 16.

Kwispaa LNG, at full build-out, is a proposed 24mn metric tons/year (mt/yr) natural gas liquefaction facility located on traditional Huu-ay-aht First Nations territory at Sarita Bay, on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The project is being co-managed by Steelhead and the Huu-ay-aht.
The facility is proposed to include jetty-moored floating liquefaction units, marine terminals and onshore components. Pending regulatory approval and a positive final investment decision in 2020, the first phase of the project, at 12mn mt/yr capacity, is expected to be operational in 2024.
